Valerie Sheridan D.O. is the Dean and Assistant Professor of A. T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-SOMA) in Mesa, Arizona. Formerly, she was the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education, Assessments and Outcomes.
Dr. Sheridan received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1991. She graduated from Albion College in 1983 with honors receiving a B.A. in Biology. She spent a year studying at the University of Sussex in England during her undergraduate years. In 1992, she completed a one-year rotating internship and in 1996, completed a general surgery residency at Mt Clemens General Hospital (now McLaren Macomb Hospital) in Mt Clemens, Michigan. She maintains board certification in General Surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.
Dr. Sheridan was in general surgical practice for twenty years. She spent seven years practicing in Michigan between Port Huron and Mt. Clemens then relocated to Arizona. From 2003—2014, she worked at various hospitals in Maricopa and Pinal counties serving underserved patient populations. The last two years of her surgical practice was as an acute care trauma surgeon in Randallstown, Maryland at Northwest Hospital and Jacksonville, North Carolina at Onslow Memorial Hospital. While practicing at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona, she served as the Surgery Department chair and Physician Advisory Council Representative to the hospital corporation for many years. She began the General Surgery Residency Program and was the first General Surgery Program Director.
Dr. Sheridan is currently involved in multiple HRSA Primary Care Training Enhancement grants. She has a passion for mentoring future leaders in healthcare.
Dr. Sheridan is a member of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). She has served on the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialty Societies, the Bureau of Graduate Medical Education and the Bureau of Federal Health Programs. Dr. Sheridan is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS). She served on the ACOS Board of Governors for twelve years and has held every executive position. She was President of the ACOS in 2015-2016. She is a distinguished fellow of the ACOS and currently remains involved furthering the education of students, residents and physicians. Dr. Sheridan is a member of the Association of Women Surgeons. She is a member and fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and has participated in the ACS Surgical Coalition in advocacy efforts. She is the immediate past Vice Chair of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Osteopathic Recognition Committee. She is an American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Health Policy Fellow and Midwestern Costin leadership graduate. She has participated as a standard setting panelist for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) COMLEX-USA Level 2 Performance Examination (Biomedical/Biomechanical Domain). She is a member of the Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association and the Arizona Public Health Association.
