John’s early career as a Navy General Surgeon, and “Devil Doc” in Iraq, taught him that innovation comes from within and needs to be done quickly. Not just a clinical lead for the company while he maintains a high-volume practice for over 19 years in Austin and serves as faculty at Dell Med School, John is a passionate and hands-on leader for the company who is actively guiding ClearCam’s strategic vision and direction.
Currently, John is the Chief of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and an associate professor in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at the University of Texas Dell Medical School.
John graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch in 1993 and then completed his general surgery training at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas. After completing his general surgery residency, he served in the Navy as the ship surgeon on the USS Enterprise. His ship was in the northern Arabian Sea on Sept. 11, 2001, and he supported Operation Enduring Freedom at that time. After returning to the States, he was deployed to Iraq with the First Marine Division at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served as a combat surgeon on the front lines.
Since 2003, John has been practicing in Austin – initially at Brackenridge Hospital and now at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. His practice currently focuses on minimally invasive treatment of hernias, gallbladder disease, GERD, endocrine (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal pathology), and colorectal problems.
John recognizes the need to spend quality time outside of the hospital and enjoys having fun with his wife of more than 29 years and their two children. He enjoys multiple outdoor activities including wakeboarding, surfing, running, biking and swimming.
